Ambulatory Medicine: Site Visit Summary

During my site visits I presented a case about a corneal abrasion and another case about a basilar skull fracture. I learned the importance of covering patients with a fluoroquinolone eye drop if they have a corneal abrasion and are contact lens wearers. Prior to presenting my case I learned a lot about basilar skull fractures. I learned they may present with raccoon eyes, battle signs, and hematympanum. My patient had the raccoon eyes, but didn’t have the other signs. During the visit I summarized an article, which discusses the use of antibiotics for basilar skull fractures to prevent meningitis. Professor Mohammad explained to me he would always recommend giving antibiotics, because the risk of giving antibiotics are very low, and it could potentially prevent a very serious complication. We also discussed the presentation for a patient with a cerebrospinal fluid leak. I also had the opportunity to listen in to my fellow classmates as they presented their cases, and to learn from them. During one of the presentations we discussed EKGs, which was a nice review.
