During this rotation I learned how to perform the mental status exam. I also learned how to triage psychiatric patients, determine who is at risk for suicide or homicide and determine what the next level of care should be. I wrote up many notes for patients and noticed how my note writing improved throughout the rotation. I also learned how to handle difficult patients, who often are not open to reasoning. Many of the patients came in with sad and difficult situations, I learned how to manage the emotional aspect of that, and how to stay focused as a provider. I had the opportunity to see many disorders which I had never seen before such as borderline personality disorder, conduct disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, manic episodes, post-partum psychosis, as well as post-covid psychosis. I often had to call family members to obtain collateral information. The family members seeing their relatives in a poor mental state was challenging. I learned how to talk to family members and calm them down. I intend to use the valuable skills I gained during this rotation to better improve my future practice as a physician assistant.
