Summary of Journal Article: Otitis media and spinal manipulative therapy: a literature review

Otitis media is a common illness in pediatrics. Acute otitis media is treated with antibiotics. Often otitis media with effusion is also treated with antibiotics, because clinicians fail to distinguish it from acute otitis media. This has added to the antibiotic resistance issue. Other methods for treating otitis media with effusion are needed. This literature review looked to see if spinal manipulation therapy could be used as a conservative treatment option for otitis media. This review included 49 articles for evaluation. It included all levels of evidence. There seems to be a potential benefit in using spinal manipulation therapy for pediatric patients with otitis media. Spinal manipulation therapy appears to have few or no adverse effects.  However, at this point no conclusions can be made. Further research is needed.
