Emergency Medicine Site Visit Summary

I had the pleasure of meeting with Ms. Shterni Seligson PA-C for my site visits. I presented a patient with left sided ear pain. The patient had mastoid tenderness and the provider decided to do a CT-scan which pointed towards mild mastoiditis. ENT was consulted and said the patient didn’t have mastoiditis. The patient was sent home with topical antibiotics. Since the CT said the patient had mastoiditis I wrote down in my assessment the patient had otitis externa and mastoiditis. Ms. Seligson explained to me since the ENT felt the patient didn’t have mastoiditis and the patient was treated only for otitis externa it would be best to write otitis externa for the diagnosis without including the mastoiditis. She also went through my drug cards with me, and asked me additional questions on things relating to my case and to my drug cards. I was able to answer some of her questions, but not all. The questions I couldn’t answer at the time, she told me to check up and get back to her, which I did. This gave me the opportunity to expand on what I know. During my second site visit we also briefly went over some of the ACLS protocols which I found to be beneficial and important. I also had the opportunity to discuss with her what it is like to work as a PA in emergency medicine. She mentioned to me the importance of finding a good mentor when you start off. I appreciated this advice and plan to use it in the future.
