Reflection on Surgical Rotation

Throughout the surgical rotation I improved on many important clinical skills, such as suturing, placing Foley catheters, sterile technique, performing physical exams. Although I was nervous at first, as I practiced, I have become more comfortable. Generally, patients come into surgery nervous, some are more nervous than others. I learned how to keep patients calm and relaxed. I gained an appreciation of the wide scope of practice that PAs work in. I was impressed when I saw a PA place an external ventricular drain on a patient bedside. I have improved on reading labs, and creating plans. These are skills I see I still need to work on. I hope to continue to improve on my skills and increase my knowledge. I intend to continue to practice reading labs and creating plans, and with feedback from others around me, I know I will get better at this.
